► DIE GESCHICHTE<br />
Burano ist schon seit dem 6. Jahrhundert<br />
bewohnt. Der sumpfi ge Boden der Insel<br />
eignete sich nicht zur Landwirtschaft und<br />
so lebten die Inselbewohner vom Fischfang.<br />
Dabei dienten die gefangenen Fische<br />
eher als Tauschobjekt zum Kauf anderer<br />
Waren, als zum Verzehr. Die Insel<br />
erlebte eine Blütezeit vom 16. bis zum 18.<br />
Jahrhundert dank der Spitzenstickereien,<br />
die die Frauen im typischen Burano-Stich<br />
fertigten und exportierten.<br />
► HISTORY<br />
Records show that Burano may have<br />
been inhabited as early as the sixth<br />
century. The marshland on the island<br />
wasn’t suited to agriculture so the<br />
islanders made a living from fi shing. The<br />
fi sh they caught wasn’t eaten as much as<br />
it was used as a currency of sorts in<br />
exchange for other goods. The island<br />
gained importance when the women who<br />
lived there started making and exporting<br />
high-quality lace in a distinctive style.<br />

► DIE FARBEN<br />
Die Insel ist für ihre konstrastreichen,<br />
knall-bunten Fassaden bekannt. Der Legende<br />
nach waren es die Frauen der Fischer,<br />
die die Häuser so farbenfroh anmalten.<br />
Dies sollte der Orientierung ihrer<br />
Ehemänner dienen, die somit bei Nacht<br />
und Nebel oder sogar beschwippst ihr<br />
Haus vom Boot aus leicht fi nden konnten.<br />
Wenn ein Haus heutzutage neu gestrichen<br />
werden soll, muss die Farbe vorher mit den<br />
Behörden abgesprochen werden.<br />

► THE COLOURS<br />
Burano is well-known for its colourful<br />
appearance with each house being<br />
painted in its own vibrant colour with<br />
maximum contrast to the neighbouring<br />
building. Legend has it that it was the<br />
fi shermen’s wives who painted them like<br />
that so their (possibly drunken) husbands<br />
would be able to spot them easily from<br />
the water, even at night. The colour of a<br />
new coat of paint on any of the facades<br />
has to be approved by the authorities.<br />
