It's a mess this place Northern Ireland, that's the trouble.
The whole rlace isone great, bloody Ir.ess. Over ten years
we've been here and it's still a mess. Even it's more of a
n:ess really. We hate half the Cathclics and half the Protestants.
The Catholics hate the Protestants, and they hate 'ern back,
and they hate uso There's German terrorists over here now
and Irish and Japs. All the governmLnt can't sort it out;
we can't sort it out. They ain't got no work and they're
blowing up factories and shops and ]Claces, and they haven't
got any work. An we're out shooting every day a:ld f~etting
ourselves killed and it' s still the same cld mess it was v.hen
I v.as a kid. That's what gets me, really, that they can't
sort it out somehow. Surely they must be able to make a go
of it somehow; there must be a way. Mind you, I don't know
what it is; I don't know it, so maybe they don't either. I
don't know. I don't know. Maybe they should unite with the
south. You do always get trouble when you cut country up
in pieces, don't you? You do, don't yOU? Like Cyprus. Mind
you, I can see it' s not to the liking of the Protestants up
here. I do see tha1. But then how do you solve it? It's just
endless. It is just an endless mess then? I can't take it for
nothing anymore. I mean if it' s all the killing you have to
do is for nothing, then what's the point? I can't take it,
anyway. And now they want to shoot our own for wanting
to run away from it. Weil I can't do it. I agree with hirn;
I don't blame hirn. How can you? There's ju st no point in it

I shoot hirn. It's just more mess, i'nt it? Just adding more
to the mes ,really. I can't see it no more, myself . No point
killing' people for nothing . is there. don 't you think?
Santos Entschlossenheit zwingt der Gegenseite unkonventionelles
Handeln auf. Und in der Tat: ein gedrucktes Formular
taucht als Beweis dafür auf, daß die ganze Exekutionsgeschichte
nur ein Test gewesen ist, um unter realistischen Bedingungen
zu erfahren, wie Soldaten in Ausnahmesituationen
reagieren. Santos verzweifelte Aktion verliert den Boden
unter den Füßen.
Offen bleibt die bohrende Frage: wie weit darf. kann, soll
der Widerstand gegen eine staatliche Anordnung gehen, die
einem als Unrecht erscheint?
