L.L. ⁄ So you don’t think of quitting?
N.L. ⁄ Never! Quitting would be the death of me. What do you do then?
L.L. ⁄ Your tips for a young entrepreneur today?
N.L. ⁄ Be honest with yourself, open with your staff. And always try to
be better than the competition on the same level. Of course you also
need the right ideas at the right time. But if you have everything under
control down to the last detail it’ll work! Many forget to work out
even the smallest things and then they trip over their own incapability
of doing so.
L.L. ⁄ You like going against the mainstream opinion. Would a life
without risk be totally boring for you?
N.L. ⁄ I can’t live without a risk. And I learned one thing: Whenever
someone says highly intelligent things I think in the other direction
and do exactly the opposite. Because I figured out that most people
simply are quite different from me. And somehow that’s always
worked out for me. Which is why my statements are always very clear
and direct. And fortunately I can afford to be!
L.L. ⁄ On October 3rd “Rush”, Peter Morgan’s film version of the
World Championship title battle between you and James Hunt in
1976 airs in Austrian cinemas. Do you like it?
N.L. ⁄ Well I’ve been involved in the project for a while – I was there to
tell Peter Morgan how things went down back then. He really wanted
to handle the topic in a way that both of us would look like winners
in the end and he did well. So my input was limited to telling him the
story and then I saw the final product. And at each premiere I went
to the film was received quite positively – even the often “negative”
Viennese people reacted with standing ovations. Young people who
never knew anything about my accident don’t know any details. The
film shows it in such great detail it even scares me. The scene in the
hospital is so harsh even I winced and there’s always someone in the
cinema who collapses.

L.L. ⁄ What does it feel like to be played by an actor?
N.L. ⁄ Well for me it was the final product that counted: do the people
like it or not? But it really is incredible how Daniel Brühl plays me.
