The ECOPROFIT ® concept of the Environmental
Department of Graz is a double value added for companies
implementing it. It helps to save operating costs and
save the environment. In the years since ECOPROFIT ® was
established, the companies participating could save no less
than 14.5 million litres of gasoline and diesel, 64.6 million cubic
metres of natural gas, 9.28 million cubic metres of water and
404,000 tons of carbon dioxide in the Styrian capital. Furthermore,
21,000 tons of tailings were saved by these companies
in the mentioned period. I sense a “vigorous and healthy” sign
of life of the ECOPROFIT ® Companies of Graz. Here what politicians
have “only” decided is translated into action. Thus we
have to add a fifth figure to the four allegoric figures on the façade
of the Town Hall, at least in our thoughts – that for special
citizens’ commitment.

Das Konzept ÖKOPROFIT ® des Grazer Umweltamtes ist gleich
auf doppelte Weise ein Gewinn für die Unternehmen, die es umsetzen:
Es werden damit Betriebskosten gespart und die Umwelt
geschont. In den vergangenen Jahren, seit ÖKOPROFIT ® eingeführt
wurde, konnten von den teilnehmenden Betrieben in der
steirischen Landeshauptstadt nicht weniger als 14,5 Millionen
Liter Benzin und Diesel, 64,6 Millionen Kubikmeter Erdgas, 9,28
Millionen Kubikmeter Wasser und 404.000 Tonnen Kohlendioxid
eingespart werden. Darüber hinaus wurden 21.000 Tonnen an
Restmüll von diesen Unternehmen im genannten Zeitraum weniger
produziert. Ich orte ein „kräftiges und gesundes“ Lebenszeichen
der Grazer ÖKOPROFIT ® -Betriebe. Hier wird gelebt, was
PolitikerInnen „nur“ beschlossen haben. Dafür muss man den
vier allegorischen Figuren an der Rathausfassade, zumindest
gedanklich, eine fünfte hinzufügen – jene für besonderes Bürgerengagement.

The City of Graz, which has operated ECO-
PROFIT ® for almost 20 years, can proudly look back upon one
of the most efficient environmental co-operations between trade
and industry and public administration. In these years, more than
150 companies have undertaken together with the experts of the
municipal authorities to reduce internal emissions and save natural
resources while reducing the operating costs. It only is thanks
to this joint commitment and the will of all parties involved to implement
the programme that ECOPROFIT ® , which originally was
a model for sustainable economic development, has come true. I
would like to cordially congratulate the companies distinguished
this year, and I also hope there will be a good co-operation in the
sense of our city and our environment even in future!

Bald 20 Jahre ÖKOPROFIT ® lassen die Stadt Graz stolz auf
eine der effizientesten Umweltschutz-Kooperationen zwischen
Wirtschaft und öffentlicher Hand zurückblicken. Mehr als 150
Betriebe haben sich in diesen Jahren gemeinsam mit den ExpertInnen
der Stadt engagiert, um betriebliche Emissionen zu
reduzieren, natürliche Ressourcen zu schonen und gleichzeitig
die betrieblichen Kosten zu senken. Nur durch dieses gemeinsame
Engagement und den Umsetzungswillen aller Beteiligten
ist ÖKOPROFIT ® vom Modell einer nachhaltigen Wirtschaftsentwicklung
zur Realität geworden. Den in diesem Jahr ausgezeichneten
Betrieben gratuliere ich recht herzlich und hoffe auch in
Zukunft auf eine gute Kooperation im Sinne unserer Stadt und
unserer Umwelt!

“Protection and solidarity” – this is what we
hoped to get from ECOPROFIT ® and its companies last year. In
the meantime the economic “general weather situation” has only
been recovering hesitantly. Since that time, the commitment and
the result of a further round with the ECOPROFIT ® “Emergency
Bag” have remained on a high level. When would sustainability
have made more sense in companies than in the middle of global
failure of purely economic maxims And when could Graz have
needed an ecological-pragmatic approach better than just now
„Schutz und Zusammenhalt“ haben wir uns im Vorjahr an dieser
Stelle von ÖKOPROFIT ® und seinen Betrieben versprochen und
die wirtschaftliche „Großwetterlage“ erholt sich inzwischen erst
zaghaft. Auf höchstem Niveau gehalten haben sich seither Einsatz
und Ergebnisse einer weiteren Runde mit dem „Notfallkoffer“
ÖKOPROFIT ® . Wann hätte Nachhaltigkeit in Betrieben mehr
Sinn gemacht, als mitten im globalen Scheitern rein wirtschaftlicher
Maximen Und wann hätte Graz einen ökologisch-pragmatischen
Ansatz besser brauchen können, als gerade jetzt
