Cradle to Cradle
“Cradle to Cradle” is the name of a concept enabling consumption
without a bad conscience. It is not a matter of
avoiding waste. Quite on the contrary: It is required to make
sure the produced waste can be used to create new products
again. This is what the founders of the “Cradle to Cradle” idea,
the chemist Michael Braungart and the architect William Mc-
Donough, have in mind.
Following the model given by nature, endeavours are to be
made not to produce any pollutants. The quantity of waste
only plays a subordinate role as compared to its quality. As
long as the leaves falling off the tree can be profitably fed
into the material cycle again, the amount of foliage is of minor
importance.
Cradle to Cradle
Cradle to Cradle (von der Wiege zur Wiege) heißt ein Konzept,
das Konsumieren ohne schlechtes Gewissen möglich macht. Es
geht nicht darum, Abfall zu vermeiden, sondern viel mehr ist darauf
zu achten, dass der produzierte Abfall wieder Ausgangsmaterial
für neue Produkte sein kann. Darum geht es den Begründern
der Cradle to Cradle Idee, dem Chemiker Michael Braungart und
dem Architekten William McDonough.
Nach dem Vorbild der Natur soll danach getrachtet werden, keine
Schadstoffe zu produzieren. Die Quantität des Abfalls spielt gegenüber
seiner Qualität nur eine untergeordnete Rolle. Solange
das vom Baum abfallende Laub wieder gewinnbringend in den
Stoffkreislauf eingebracht werden kann, ist die Menge an Laub
nebensächlich.
“Cradle to Cradle” covers the whole production cycle, which
ranges from winning of raw materials to reutilization in a new
production cycle.
It is not only the final user separating glass and plastics that
is important. But the development of reusable materials also
is an important part of the philosophy. Compostable furniture
covering, biologically decomposable t-shirts, completely recyclable
carpets, shoes and office furniture prove that “Cradle to
Cradle” can be implemented.
Since November 2009, the Department of Economic and Tourism
Development has been a partner in an EU Programme serving
to implement the “Cradle to Cradle” idea. Under the name
“Cradle to Cradle Network (C2CN)”, 10 regions are working
at familiarizing companies and public administrations with the
C2C principle and supporting them in changing over to this philosophy
under the direction of the Province of Limburg. C2CN is
a fast track programme whose results will be incorporated into
the next operational programme (Guidelines of the Programme
Period 2014 – 2020) of the EU. This shows what importance
“Cradle to Cradle” already has on a European scale and emphasizes
the pioneer role Graz has in this respect.
Cradle to Cradle bezieht den gesamten Produktionskreislauf, von
der Rohstoffgewinnung bis zur Wiederverwertung in einen neuen
Produktionszyklus ein.
Nicht nur der Endverbraucher, der Glas und Plastik trennt, ist
wichtig, sondern auch die Entwicklung von wieder verwendbaren
Materialien ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Philosophie.
Kompostierbare Möbelbezüge, biologisch abbaubare T-Shirts,
vollständig recyclebare Teppiche, Schuhe und Büromöbel beweisen,
dass Cradle to Cradle umsetzbar ist.
Die Abteilung für Wirtschafts- und Tourismusentwicklung ist seit
November 2009 Partner in einem EU Programm zur Umsetzung
der Cradle to Cradle Idee. Unter dem Namen Cradle to Cradle
Network (C2CN) arbeiten 10 Regionen unter der Ägide der
Provinz Limburg daran, Unternehmen und Verwaltung mit dem
C2C Prinzip vertraut zu machen und bei der Umstellung auf diese
Philosophie zu unterstützen. C2CN ist ein Fast Track Programm,
dessen Ergebnisse in das nächste operative Programm (Richtlinien
der Programmperiode 2014 – 2020) der EU einfließen werden.
Dies zeigt, welche Bedeutung Cradle to Cradle bereits auf
europäischer Ebene hat und unterstreicht die Vorreiterrolle, die
Graz in diesem Zusammenhang einnimmt.
