Europe, Ukraine is Europe’s second largest
country (603,700 square kilometers)
and is surrounded by seven countries:
Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania,
Moldova, Russia, and Belarus. Ukraine’s climate is moderate and yearly average
temperatures range from 6 to 9 degrees Celsius – except for in the southern
steppes and in Crimea, where yearly average temperatures are slightly warmer
(10 to 13 degrees Celsius).
Ukraine’s half yellow and half blue flag was officially adopted twice – once
during the Ukrainian independence between 1917-1920 and then again after
the declaration of independence in 1991. The colors are believed to represent
blue skies above yellow wheat fields. During Soviet rule of Ukraine, this flag
was forbidden as a national symbol. Instead Ukrainian SSR had its own flag,
until it gained independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991 after
almost 200 years of being under their domination.
Ukrainian cuisine is based on the plentiful grains and staple vegetables – sugar
beets, potatoes, grapes, cabbages, and mushrooms, which are grown in the
country. One of Ukraine’s most popular dishes is borscht, which is a hearty
soup that can be made in a variety of ways. Pork is considered to be the national
meat of Ukraine, and pork fat is frequently used in cooking. Common dairy
products include milk, riazhanka (fermented baked milk), syrnyky (cottage
cheese fritters), and nalynsnyk (cheese-filled crepes). Ukrainian desserts
include sweet cookies, cakes, and breads, which can be made with honey and
fruits.
Ukrainians normally eat a light breakfast. Typically breakfast foods include:
bread with butter, pastries, steamed buckwheat, barley, or millet with milk.
Ukrainians usually eat their main meal, normally consisting of soup and a meat
or poultry dish, around mid-afternoon. The final meal of the day is typically
eaten around 6 or 7 p.m., and it is an opportunity for all family members to
