FACTS AND FIGURES
With the start of the 2017/18 winter season, the most intensive phase of construction to date at the
SkiArena Andermatt-Sedrun will come to an end. Around 200 workers, with 40 heavy machines,
ten cranes and up to three helicopters, have been deployed every day from early summer until the
autumn. They have been working simultaneously at eight construction sites and have made enormous
progress in the project to connect the ski areas between Andermatt and Sedrun – so that, by the
end of 2018, we will have the largest ski area in Central Switzerland.
The expansion of the ski lift infrastructure commenced in 2015. By the winter of that same year, skiers
were able to use a new, six-seater chairlift as the replacement for the ski lift and the two-seater
chairlift on the Gurschen. Two further lift systems were added last winter – one at Nätschen and one
at the Oberalp Pass.
And, this winter season, the ski area in the Uri and Graubünden Alps can look forward to yet more new
additions: a 8-person gondola, the “Gütsch-Express”, will take visitors directly from the railway
station in Andermatt to the new Nätschen mid-station and then onward to the Gütsch. The midway
station also offers a family restaurant and a children's paradise to discover. And the two new,
six-seater chairlifts “Lutersee-Flyer” and “Schneehüenerstock-Flyer” complete the integration of
Andermatt’s two ski areas into Surselva from the Ursern Valley onward.
The first construction phase will be completed in the coming winter with the opening of the “Schneehüenerstock-Express”
gondola from Oberalp to the Schneehüenerstock, thereby providing the
connection in the opposite direction as well. Together with the construction of the new rail facilities in
the SkiArena, a continuous snow making system (see page 27) will also be installed from Andermatt
to Sedrun. This will ensure more versatile skiing with guaranteed snow cover.
