It’s no wonder that these systems for
precise surface processing are in
demand worldwide – from the USA to
China. Based on ion beam and plasma
technologies, they are used for various
coating, etching and cleaning processes,
including in the microelectronics
and precision optics industries. “You
can think of it as sandblasting on the
nanometre scale,” explains Marketing
Manager Mandy Eckert. To give just
a few examples, all 798 segments of
the main mirror in the world’s largest
telescope in Chile have been processed
with equipment from scia Systems. For
the production of augmented reality
glasses, the company’s machines etch
the finest optical gratings into the glass,
and its expertise also comes into play
in medicine – including in the coating of
stents, medical implants made of metal.
“We even claim that 99.9 per cent of
Chemnitz residents have already held
in their hands a smartphone whose
components have passed through our
machines,” says Mandy Eckert confidently.
These machines, which go by
the name of scia Trim 200, ensure a
greater yield of base plates (wafers)
in semiconductor production and are
also the company’s best seller. For
other industries, scia Systems machines
can easily be up to 15 metres long
and weigh 60 tonnes. On average, 40
machines leave the production line
every year. On site at its location in Clemens-Winkler-Straße
in Chemnitz, the
comparatively young company is not
yet dependent on international specialists,
but its cooperation with companies
from other countries is decisive in its
success: “Worldwide, 17 sales partners
take care of sales, represent us at trade
fairs and also oversee international
projects with service staff.” Working
with them has a clear advantage: “Our
partners know the regional and local
customs on the ground. A sales talk in
China, for example, differs enormously
from a company presentation in Turkey.”
But even though its cooperation
with international skilled workers is currently
still limited to its overseas business,
scia Systems is watching the local
labour market very closely. There could
be more new recruits, in particular
from the skilled trades and the IT sector.
Mandy Eckert emphasises that the
company can’t rule out hiring skilled
workers from abroad to fill vacancies at
the Chemnitz site in the future. “We see
qualifications and language barriers as
the biggest challenges. Good German
language skills are absolutely essential
for communication within our team
and with customers.” In order to meet
the future demand for skilled workers,
scia Systems is also training future
industrial mechanics and mechatronics
engineers itself. This will be expanded
with trainees specialising in warehouse
logistics from the 2024 training year.
And those who gain a foothold in the
company are very likely to stay for a
long time: “We have little fluctuation
in our workforce,” says Mandy Eckert
proudly. “This is down to good teamwork
and our low-hierarchy structures
and short communication channels.
Holiday and Christmas bonuses, our
own canteen and family-friendly, flexible
working hours also contribute to
the satisfaction of our employees.” And
when the opportunity arises, they also
celebrate together. And, without giving
too much away, we can reveal this:
there are plenty of such opportunities
at scia Systems.
