If you live in a peaceful country,
you can forget that things are not as
harmonious everywhere in the world
as they are in Germany.
Just 1,500 kilometres away, Ukraine
is fighting for its survival: since the
Russian war of aggression last year,
many Ukrainian families have fled to
Germany. But what is rarely mentioned
are the people in Russia who are
against the war and don’t want to be
used in Putin’s dreams of conquest.
Andrey is one such person. In September
2022, Putin ordered the
general mobilisation of his country.
This meant that men of fighting age
were to go to war against Ukraine.
The police were already at the house
of the then 49-year-old mechanical
engineer. Without further ado, he fled
to Kazakhstan to avoid serving in a
war he opposed.
In the past, Andrey had worked for
many Russian branches of German
companies, including BOSCH and
BASF. In exile, he wrote letters to German
friends. One recipient was Frank
Stockmann, the managing director of
the Chemnitz site of the Straumann
subsidiary DENTAL WINGS. Frank already
knew Andrey’s older daughter,
who was spending her year abroad in
Chemnitz and living with the Stockmann
family. It was clear to Frank that
he and his team had to help. So his
HR manager Madlen Lauterbach got
on the ball and took charge of organising
an accelerated skilled worker
procedure and a work visa. And their
efforts were rewarded: Andrey was
able to start at DENTAL WINGS as a
test engineer in January 2023. His
new employer paid for his further
training.
The fact that he no longer works in
his actual profession doesn’t bother
Andrey. “I enjoy the work, and I like
the atmosphere in the team,” explains
the family man. Having breakfast
each day with his friendly colleagues,
many of whom have foreign roots,
certainly helps.
Not just a professional
home in Chemnitz
One of them is Mona from Iran. She
came to Germany with her husband
in 2017. Mona is responsible for the
quality assurance of DENTAL WINGS’
medical software within the international
company. This means that, before
the software’s launch, she checks
which legal requirements it must
fulfil for the respective market and
documents precisely that the criteria
are met. As she works in an international
environment and the company
documentation is also in English,
integration was very easy for her. She
also learnt German to B2 level in just
six months.
Skilled workers like Mona with her
international professional experience
are in demand on the labour market.
While the authorities don’t always
make immigration easy, there are still
opportunities to gain a foothold. Companies
with international operations
such as DENTAL WINGS are happy
to welcome qualified immigrants, as
the Chemnitz site communicates with
other company locations all over the
world: in Canada, the USA and even
Brazil, to name just a few.
Russian engineer Andrey now feels at
home in Germany, as do his wife and
young son, who have joined him. He
doesn’t like the political situation in
his home country at all, which is why
he has made a new home here. He
has already bought a small house in
a suburb of Chemnitz. “But it never
would have worked without Madlen
and Frank,” says Andrey.
