in the company,” laughs Marie Friedrich,
and she adds: “Having office events
for the whole team also helps people to
get to know each other and to network
– sometimes at the soft-serve ice-cream
machine, sometimes over a bag of
popcorn or at a big Halloween party.” The
company does not hold Christmas parties
in the traditional sense, however, out
of respect for all the employees’ religious
backgrounds. “Instead, we have a holiday
party that is not linked to any religion or
customs.” She has some tips for companies
that want to position themselves
as attractive employers internationally:
“Just do it and don’t hope for groundbreaking
political changes. Diversity in
the workforce brings many different perspectives,
skills and cultural influences
that foster creativity and innovation.”
This is in the nature of the company,
which will be just ten years old in 2024,
but is already represented in seven
other countries besides Germany – in
the Netherlands, the UK, Finland, Sweden,
the USA, Canada and Australia. More
than 700 employees worldwide work on
the Staffbase communications platform,
which connects companies and their
employees – on desktop computers,
via email, chat or an app. The Chemnitz
location alone has 165 employees, including
international professionals from 14
nations. Marie Friedrich, Vice President
of People Experience, is therefore very
familiar with terms such as residence
and settlement permit, EU Blue Card and
visa. “Nevertheless, integration into the
local world of work is always a tough and
gruelling process. Waiting months for a
work permit is not the exception but the
rule.” She knows something else, too: “However,
that isn’t the end of it. Our culture
of welcome doesn’t stop in the workplace
but extends beyond it. That means that
we offer a relocation service and put
together individual packages that include
things such as help with moving or with
finding day-care and school places for
the children. Our packages also cover
issues such as health insurance, other
types of insurance and language
acquisition. Involvement in everyday life
is an essential step towards full integration.”
Staffbase also leaves nothing to
chance when it comes to onboarding, the
planned integration of new employees
into the company. Buddies support the
new team members as direct points of
contact and make sure they are familiar
with all the important information. They
act like mentors – with the difference that
they are on an equal footing. Staffbase
distinguishes between two types of
buddies: Role Buddies usually come
from the same team or similar functions
and explain the employee’s immediate
working environment. Culture Buddies,
on the other hand, help new employees
understand the company’s vision, culture
and strategy. It’s not uncommon for German
cultural peculiarities to need some
explaining, according to Marie Friedrich:
“An Indian employee whose daughter
was about to start school had no idea
what the custom of giving children a
‘school cone’ on their first day of school
was. To make sure her little girl wasn’t
the only child without a school cone filled
with goodies on her first day, our parents
