“I had to explain again and again that you eat pani puri
with your hands. You have to fill the dough balls with the
sauces and then bite into them quickly,” laughs Priyal
Narola. “When I told my dad back home that nobody knew
this, he couldn’t even imagine it.” When his company
hosted a culinary get-together, the process development
engineer prepared his favourite Indian street food: crispy,
deep-fried dough balls made from wheat flour, cornflour
and semolina (pani), which are filled with a more or less
liquid curry (puri).

She is already planning the next culinary
get-together and gathering ideas
– “After all, we can’t have our international
colleagues cook every time now.”
Even if there are certainly some who
would like to try another dish prepared
by Priyal Narola. “Maybe next time we’ll
let our colleagues from Bavaria do the
cooking.” (laughs)

It was the first event of its kind organised
by 3D-Micromac: international
specialities instead of the usual grilled
sausage. All the international employees
who wanted to take part were given time
off work and a small budget to either
cook or source a favourite meal from
a restaurant. “We have to bear in mind
that not everyone likes to cook,” says
HR officer Maria Göbel. Since 2022, she
has prioritised intercultural encounters
and integrating international employees
– after all, there are quite a few of them
at 3D-Micromac: in total, 21 of its 197
employees come from abroad.
Together, they develop laser systems
that cut photovoltaic cells for satellites
or lenses for AR glasses, drill microfine
holes in filters and perform any other
tasks that defeat conventional tools due
to their lack of precision. “The machines
we develop are generally used to manufacture
products and technologies that
won’t come on to the market until 2030,
2035 or 2040,” adds Maria Göbel with
obvious pride.
To make sure that the company remains
as future-proof as its technologies,
3D-Micromac has long recognised
internationalisation as an opportunity
in the pervasive struggle against the
shortage of skilled workers – which also
means creating a work culture in which
employees from all backgrounds feel
comfortable. According to Priyal Narola,
3D-Micromac is already doing a lot of
things right here: “The style of work
is different from India. There is a flat
hierarchy here. I have more freedom to
contribute my ideas and suggestions.
This also makes for a friendly and
supportive working environment and
a relaxed working atmosphere.” At the
same time, Maria Göbel makes sure that
new recruits have a few basic English
skills if possible. Although the company
language is still German, not all foreign
employees are proficient enough yet in
