other side, to finde the people had languages, and were full<br />

of humanity, did comfort us ; above all, the signe of the<br />

crosse was to us a great rejoycing and a certain presage of<br />

good. Our answer was in the Spanish tongue that our<br />

ship was well, our sick many, and in very ill case, so that<br />

if they were not permitted to land, they ran in danger of<br />

their lives. Our other wants we set down in particular, add-<br />

ing that we had some little merchandize, which, if it pleased<br />

them to deale for, might supply our wants without being<br />

chargable unto them. We offered some reward in pistolet<br />

unto the servant, and a piece of crimson velvet for the officer,<br />

but he took them not, nor would scarce look upon them,<br />

and so left us in another boat which was sent for him.<br />

About three hours after there came towards us a person<br />

of place. He had a gown with wide sleaves of a kinde of<br />

water chamolot, of an excellent green colour, farre more<br />

glossie than ours. His under apparel was green azure, and<br />

so was his hat, being in the form of a turban, daintily made<br />

and not so large as Turkish turbans. The locks of his<br />

haire came below the brims of it. A reverend man was he<br />

to behold. He came in a boat partly gilt, with foure persons<br />

more, and was followed by another boat, wherein were<br />

some twenty. When he was within a flight-shot of our<br />

ship, signes<br />

were made that we should send some to meet<br />

him, which we presently did in our ship boat, sending the<br />

principall man amongst us, save one, and foure of our num-<br />

ber with him. When [we were come within six yards of<br />

their boat, they called to us to stay, and thereupon the man<br />

whom I before described stood up, and with a loud voice,
