He led us thorow three faire streets, and all the way there<br />

were gathered some people on both sides in a row,<br />

so civill a fashion as if it had been not to wonder at us, but<br />

to welcome us. Divers of them as we passed put their<br />

arms a little abroad, which is their gesture when they bid<br />

any welcome. The strangers' house is faire and spacious,<br />

built of brick, and with handsome windows, some of glass,<br />

some of a kind of cambrick oyled. He brought us into a<br />

faire parlour above staires, and then asked what number of<br />

sick 1 We answered that<br />

we were in all 250, whereof our sick were seventeen. He<br />

persons we were, and how many<br />

desired us to stay till he came back, which was about an<br />

houre after, and then he led us to see the chambers pro-<br />

vided for us, being in number 250. They<br />

cast it that foure<br />

of those chambers, which were better than the rest, might<br />

receive foure of our principal men ; the rest were to lodge<br />

us. The chambers were handsome, cheerful, and furnished<br />

civilly.<br />

Then he led us to a long gallery, where he showed<br />

us along one side seventeen cells, having partitions of cedar,<br />

which gallery and cells, being in all 900, were instituted as<br />

an infirmary. He told us withall that as any one sick waxed<br />

well he might be removed to a chamber, for which purpose<br />

there were set forth ten spare chambers. This done, he<br />

brought us back to the parlour, and lifting up<br />

his cane a<br />

little, as they doe when they give any command, said to<br />

us :<br />

" Ye are to know that the custom of the land requireth<br />

that, after this day and to-morrow, which we give you for<br />

removing your people from your ship, you are to keep within
