Waverley Council State of the Environment Activities 2005/2006 Air Planned Activities Page No Increased use of more sustainable alternative transport 151 opportunities Following an Inter Department Transport Workshop in November 2005, an officer was recruited in January 2006 to implement sustainable alternative transport behaviour change programs. Programs developed and implemented to date include a “Walk Safely to School Day” in which 700 students participated, a “Walking School Bus” at Bondi Public School where children walk to school in small groups under the supervision of authorised adults, and the “Waverley Family Bike Fair” which attracted 2500 locals in June. A sustainable alternative transport action plan has been developed in consultation with Council officers and is due for adoption by Council in September 2006. Complete identified programs in the Waverley Response to Global 166 Warming Action Plan. As part of our commitment to greenhouse gas reduction, Council has implemented 100% of the programs identified within the Waverley Greenhouse Reduction Action Plan (2003). This year this has included the recruitment of a dedicated officer to develop and implement sustainable transport behaviour change programs, such as the Walk to School Bus pilot project with Bondi Public School and the Waverley Family Bike Fair. Other programs included the distribution of energy saving packs to residents at World Environment Day, the continuation of the Waverley Greenlinks project to encourage walking and cycling throughout Waverley and the promotion of local car share operations. Complete Milestone 5 of the Cities Climate Program. 166 Council completed the fifth and final milestone of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) in June 2005. In April 2006, Council signed up to the ICLEI CCP Plus program to continue to work towards achieving its local greenhouse gas reduction target. Non-structural (behavioural change) options to reduce car use. 167 Carshare was implemented in January 2006 and an evaluation was completed in June 2006. Following the implementation of this pilot program, Council recruited a dedicated officer to develop and implement further sustainable transport behaviour change programs. The directions and strategies of the Bondi Chapter of the Strategic Plan were incorporated into Council’s 2006/2010 Management Plan and are being implemented. Visitor information, regulation and interpretative signage for 22, 159 Beach, Park and Coastal walk installed. All visitor information, surf safety and regulatory signs were installed in the Bondi to Bronte coastal zone in October 2005 prior to this year's Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. Environmental theme interpretive signs and sculptures were installed in November 2005 along the Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk. The Major officially opened both signage projects on 8 December 2005. Both projects have been well received by the public. Number of affordable and accessible cultural programs at 34 Bondi Pavilion including school holiday programs, music and arts projects, concerts and exhibitions. A total of 61 programs were held at the Bondi Pavilion over the year. The broad range of projects and programs held included: 115 art & craft workshops and 6 performances catered for 2123 participants as part of the school holiday programs 200 children were involved in ‘Caring for our Native Bush’ program for World Environment Day 3 after school pottery classes per week were provided for children during each school term and six pottery workshops per week (2 for targeted groups) were provided for adults over the year, catering for approximately 70 participants per week a broad range of classes for preschoolers, children and youth including art classes, ballet, literacy, music and movement and school studies theatre groups for youth a free Music Industry Seminar for over 300 young people giving participants an insight and training in the music industry. This was held as part of the Bondi Wave Youth Music Program a series of music tutorials and courses held over 12 weeks for 95 high school students (also part of the Bondi Wave program) the Musicians in Residence Programs have resulted in: production of a CD by the Pavilion Seniors Band (CD launch in September 2006) formation and classes for the Seniors Singing Group who now perform for local community groups, festivals and fundraising events completion of a children’s Sound Sculpture project preschool music & CD programs (Sleepover CD) in collaboration with the Waverley Council Child Care Centres a primary school aged rock band, song writing and recording project.
