Silk embroidery on fine linen silk ground.

Although the city of Mitelini is only fifteen miles
from the Turkish coast on the island of Lesbos, the
embroideries produced there exhibit their own special
Greek Island character. This shawl shows a garden
with cypress trees, birds, stylized flowers, and a house
in the center of each end. A variation of a Greek
wave design surrounds the garden. Twisted fringe
at both ends, red silk tassels added. (detail of shawl end, left image)
