The original function of these elaborately decorated
pieces was as lap cloths or table coverings in elite
households. They became so valued that they were
only used to enhance civil or religious ceremonies or
other formal occasions. The designs always feature
a central diamond, multiple decorated bands across
the field, using mostly geometric and occasionally
animal forms. Both edges have six guard stripes.
