INDONESIA – Java Long Cloth (Kain Panjang, Pagi-Sore) Mid 20 th Century Cotton batik, three colors; blue-black, light brown, and natural. 208 x 107 cm 82 x 42 in This very fine batik garment, worn by both men and women, is a variation of the typical Kain Panjang. The design is of two distinctly different patterns, usually lighter and darker, and usually divided by a diagonal line. A more formal garment than the typical sarong, the pagi-sore requires only a rearrangement of the fabric to create an alternative presentation. The symbolic representation of the garuda bird on the dark side and the paulownia flowers floating on geometric and floral bands on the light side result in a lively counterpoint. 26
