● Once action has been taken on a target or target<br />

indicator by the S-3, that information flows<br />

back to the TPC for file management.<br />

● A significant amount of target traffic enters the<br />

COC via the FDC. Reports from battalion S-2s<br />

and FOs arrive over the regiment intelligence<br />

or FDC nets.<br />

Battle Damage Assessment<br />

BDA is a critical step in the targeting process.<br />

BDA reports from FOs are critical since a<br />

target may still present a threat after it has been<br />

fired upon. BDA received by DS artillery<br />

battalions should be sent to higher headquarters<br />

via the supported infantry regiment. The artillery<br />

regiment S-2 should report BDA of GS<br />

artillery fire missions and regiment mass<br />

missions to higher headquarters/supported<br />

maneuver commanders.<br />

The TPC must coordinate with the S-3 on the<br />

commander’s attack guidance matrix. See figure<br />

2-6. Highest priority targets must be brought to<br />

the FDC’s attention immediately.<br />

Target selection standards information must be<br />

considered when making a confirmed/suspected<br />

target determination. Targets are carefully<br />

analyzed to prevent firing on dummy targets and<br />

old positions. Considerations to be examined<br />

include the following:<br />

● Is the threat using deception measures?<br />

● How effective are the threat’s deception<br />

measures?<br />

● What are the threat’s artillery tactics?<br />

Quickfire <strong>Operations</strong><br />

Quickfire is a tactic involving CBR and a fire<br />

support asset to destroy threat artillery. First,<br />

the target is located by primarily using the<br />

CBR. Once it is determined that the target<br />

cannot be eliminated by friendly artillery, it is<br />

handed over to another fire support asset for<br />

attack. The alternate method is to pass the<br />

target information to the division FSCC. The<br />

division FSCC then assigns the target to a fire<br />

support asset for attack.<br />
