Pycnonotus flavescens Flavescent Bulbul. Resident; north B7 ,<br />

south B2 . Open evergreen forest, forest edge, scrub and grass<br />

amid secondary growth, generally above 1000 m.<br />

Pycnonotus goiavier Yellow-vented Bulbul. Resident;<br />

south B15 . Riverine secondary growth and scrub <strong>of</strong> lowlands.<br />

First recorded in 1996 (Evans et al. in prep. a); perhaps a<br />

recent colonist.<br />

Pycnonotus blanfordi Streak-eared Bulbul. Resident; north,<br />

centre, south B2 . Secondary growth, gardens, cultivation;<br />

generally lowlands. Only natural habitat supporting high densities<br />

seems to be seasonally inundated scrub on river channel<br />

islands.<br />

Alophoixus pallidus (= Criniger pallidus, ^K, ^T) Puffthroated<br />

Bulbul. Resident; north, centre, south B2 . Evergreen<br />

forest and secondary growth generally below 1000 m (but<br />

up to 1400 m), sometimes in adjacent scrub.<br />

Iole propinqua (= Hypsipetes propinquus, ^K, ^T) Grey-eyed<br />

Bulbul. Resident; north B1 , centre, south B2 . Evergreen forest<br />

and mature scrub up to at least 1100 m.<br />

Hemixos flavala (= Hypsipetes flavala, ^K, ^T) Ashy Bulbul.<br />

Resident; north, centre B10 , south B2 . Evergreen forests and tall<br />

secondary growth, mostly over 500 m, locally down to 350<br />

m.<br />

Hypsipetes mcclellandii Mountain Bulbul. Resident; north B4 ,<br />

centre B10 , south B2 . Evergreen forests and tall secondary growth<br />

above 800 m.<br />

Hypsipetes leucocephalus Black Bulbul (included in H.<br />

madagascariensis Black Bulbul by ^K, ^T). Locally resident<br />

(a black headed race) with winter visitors (both black<br />

and, mainly, white headed races) widespread; north B1 ,<br />

centre B10 , south B2 . Forests, secondary growth, scrub and cultivation;<br />

breeders mainly in hills and plateaux above 600 m,<br />

but in winter birds occur down to 120 m.<br />

Cisticolidae: Cisticolas, prinias (8 species)<br />

Cisticola juncidis Zitting Cisticola. Resident; north B2 ,<br />

centre B10 , south B2 . Paddy-fields, grass and scrub in otherwise<br />

open areas up to at least 1200 m.<br />

Cisticola exilis Bright-headed Cisticola (= Bright-capped<br />

Cisticola, ^K, ^T; = Golden-headed Cisticola, ^Sm). Resident;<br />

north B2 , centre B16 , south B11 . Tall grass, scrub and other<br />

thickly-vegetated areas amid cultivation, up to at least 1200<br />

m; usually near water. Most localities are on the Mekong<br />

plain, but it occurs on the Dakchung Plateau (Showler et al.<br />

1998a). First recorded for <strong>Lao</strong> <strong>PDR</strong> in 1993, in Vientiane<br />

(Thewlis et al. 1996).<br />

Prinia polychroa Brown Prinia. Resident; centre<br />

(historically B22 ), south B2 . Primarily dry dipterocarp forest, also<br />

rocky savanna; generally lowlands.<br />

Prinia atrogularis Hill Prinia. Resident; north B9 , centre B7 ,<br />

south B2 . Clearings in evergreen forest, secondary growth,<br />

grass and dense low scrub, <strong>of</strong>ten in tussocks amid cultivation;<br />

generally above 900 m. The records for this species from<br />

Vientiane, Vangviang (Vientiane Province) and the Ban Paam<br />

area (Attapu Province) in Duckworth et al. (1998a) were<br />

typographical errors.<br />

Prinia rufescens Rufescent Prinia. Resident; north B2 , centre,<br />

south B2 . Grass, scrub, secondary growth, understorey <strong>of</strong><br />

open deciduous and semi-evergreen forest up to at least 1200<br />

m.<br />

Prinia hodgsonii Grey-breasted Prinia. Resident; north B2 ,<br />

centre B10 , south B2 . Coarse rank herbs, <strong>of</strong>ten admixed with<br />

many woody shrubs, secondary growth and grass up to at<br />

least 980 m.<br />

Prinia flaviventris Yellow-bellied Prinia. Resident; north B2 ,<br />

centre B10 , south B2 . Grass, reeds, scrub, with highest densities<br />

in seasonally-inundated scrub on river channel islands; up to<br />

at least 1000 m.<br />

Prinia inornata Plain Prinia (included in P. subflava Tawnyflanked<br />

Prinia by ^K). Resident; north B2 , centre B10 , south B2 .<br />

Wet areas in reeds, grass, secondary growth, paddy-fields,<br />

dense vegetated pools within deciduous forest; generally lowlands<br />

and foothills but up to at least 1200 m.<br />

Zosteropidae: White-eyes (3 species)<br />

Birds<br />

Zosterops erythropleurus (= Z. erythropleura, ^K) Chestnutflanked<br />

White-eye. Irruptive winter visitor; north B6 ,<br />

centre B16 . Evergreen forest, generally above 800 m; once in<br />

secondary growth at about 150 m (TDE). First recorded in<br />

December 1995, near Louang-Namtha (Dymond 1995).<br />

Zosterops palpebrosus (= Z. palpebrosa, ^K) Oriental Whiteeye.<br />

Seasonal status unclear, but at least locally resident; north,<br />

centre B7 , south B5 . Forest, secondary growth, villages and<br />

towns up to at least 1000 m. <strong>Status</strong> obscure, due to identification<br />

difficulties with congeners.<br />

Zosterops japonicus (= Z. japonica, ^K) Japanese Whiteeye.<br />

Seasonal status unclear, probably mainly or solely a<br />

winter visitor; north, centre B7 , south B5 . Open evergreen<br />
