Young White-handed Gibbon, Xaignabouli, early 1998. This<br />

gibbon has a small range in <strong>Lao</strong> <strong>PDR</strong> as it occurs only west <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Mekong. It is widespread elsewhere in South-east Asia.<br />

Phayre’s Langur, Phongsali Province, March 1996. No large population<br />

<strong>of</strong> this langur is currently known in <strong>Lao</strong> <strong>PDR</strong>. It may be the most<br />

Young macaques are commonly kept as pets. The mother was<br />

1998. Faecal deposits and stains such as these are valuable indicators<br />

<strong>of</strong> the species’s presence in areas where hunting has made the monkeys<br />
