The strongest Armenian terrorist group, the ASA LA , has
always relied entirely on the Soviet Union. Lately however,
they have also found very strong support from Iran.
Two strongly Marxist-oriented splinter groups have
recently broken o ff from the A SA LA : the DF-PM LA
(Democratic Front o f the Popular Movement for the
Liberation of. Arm enia) and the ARA (Armenian
Revolutionary Army), until recently called the "Justice
Commandos o f the Armenian Genocide" (JCAG). The
A SA LA enjoys widespread support in France, where the
Armenians make up a very wealthy, infuential group
numbering more than 400.000. Some 5000 Armenians
took part in a protest march organized by the ASA LA in
France, many o f them sporting badges and flags o f the
terrorist organization. Many ASA LA supporters are also
associated with the Armenian National Movement led by
Ara Toranian. A number o f captured Armenian terrorists
have acknowledged the support that the A SA LA receives
from George Habash's PFLP. The PFLP also supports
Kurdish separatist movements in the Near East.
Both the A SA LA and the ARA have repeatedly demonstrated
that they can operate worldwide, in cooperation
with Palestinian as well as Kurdish extremist groups.
Their stated goal o f weakening the United States and its
NATO allies, above all Turkey, strengthens the suspicion
that it is ultimately the Soviets who are behind all the
Armenian terrorist activities.

Arshavir Shiragian, Soghomon Tehlirian, Aram Yerga-
nian, and Missak Torlakian are celebrated as "Armenian
national heroes" - as if political murder, "execution" without
trial or proof o f guilt, ever did a nation any good.
Varujian Garabedian, the leader o f the gang that committed
mass murder at Orly Airport on July 15, 1983. Eight people
were killed in that bomb explosion and sixty others were
wounded. Many o f the wounded will remain cripples for the
rest o f their lives. Garabedian was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Some observers believe that Garabedian, operating under
the alias Hagop Hago-pian, could even be the head o f the
A SA LA . The authorities have never been able to establish
Hagopian's true name and identity.
