Searching for a story his wife Alma remembered a visit to
an Armenian carpet-factory in Damascus, where he had
seen Armenian orphans working at the weaver's looms.
Armenian go-betweens immediately recognizing that
they got a turn provided him with "material", stuff which
consisted o f Aram Andonians "documents".
Werfel's substratum of "truth "
Sinasi Orel and Siireyya Yuca published at the beginning
of the eighties a blue-book "The Talat Pasha Telegrams -
Historical fact or Armenian fiction" (K. Rustem&Brother,
Levkosa, ISBN 9963-565-07-7) where they precisely dis
prove the Armenian allegations. They write:
"For many years a campaign has been directed against
Turkey with the claim that Armenians were "massacred"
by the Ottoman Govemmant during he First World War.
After the Second World ar the term "Genocide" was
added to these "massacre" charges, with the intentin o f
bringeng to mind the Nazi holocaust o f Europea Jewry...
Immediately following the First World War... the claim
was advanced to ensure that a share o f the Ottoman ter-
riotories... would be set aside for the Armenians."
THE
TALAT PASHA
TELEGRAMS
Historical fact or Armenian fiction ?
As we know, powers love the treason but never the trai
tors and the Armenians were all at a sudden empty-hand
ed. In this situation an unknown Armenian named Aram
Andonian produced a collection o f "official papers"
under the title The memoirs o f Naim Bey: Turkish official
documents relatiwhich to the deportations and Massacres
o f Armenians" which should bnrandmark the Turks as a
nation o f murderers, not worthy to have a state o f their
own.
Andonian published this work 1920 in Paris, London and
Boston and distributed it worldwide in French, English
and Armenian. "Since that day these "documents were the
backbone o f their claims" writes Sinasi Orel in his book
"and until recent no one had subjected Andonians falsifi
cations". But with the scientific approach o f Sinasi Orel
and S. Yuca to unmask this typical Armenian forgery,
more than half o f a century too late, Andonians fame
ended in shame. In the book o f Orel&Yuca we find an ini
tial remark, an excuse by the noble authors who did not
want to blame their govemment(s) "Turkey, the modern
Republic, had more important things to do than deal with
Armenian propaganda". I doubt. In my opinion it would
have been one o f the most important tasks o f the Turkish
authorities to blame the Armenians immediately after the
appearance o f these "papers". Actually the were no papers
at all, all what Andonian had to show were photographic
reproductions. They disappeared meanwhile, and as good
as all copies o f this forgery have been removed from pub
lic libraries in order to hide the truth about the falsifica
tions.
Unfortunately Werfel got these "documents", a fact,
which can be easily demonstrated by several passages in
his book, e. g. when he describes the moment o f Talaat's
decision to extinguish the Armenian race:
"The same forthright and stumpy fingers (of Talaat
Pasha) had composed that order sent out to the walis and
mutessarifs: The goal o f these deportations is annihilation.
"
Sinasi Orel und Siirreyya Yuca unmasked Andonian's claim
that Armenians were "m assacred" by the Ottomans. The
authors compiled the forged "historical" documents.
They are indeed "historical" in the sense o f a unique effort to
betray worl opinion.
