Finally, we note that the surface layer divergence may<br />
be forced by a wind stress curl rather than the presence <strong>of</strong> a<br />
coastal boundary without altering the essential dynamics <strong>of</strong><br />
the process. Thus, with suitable rescaling <strong>and</strong> inclusion <strong>of</strong><br />
the a-effect, a version <strong>of</strong> this model may be applicable to<br />
the study <strong>of</strong> wind-driven thermocline upwelling in the great<br />
subarctic gyres <strong>of</strong> the open ocean.<br />
