The Legend of Sky Woman accounts for the making of the world <strong>and</strong> people,<br />

<strong>and</strong> also explains the existence of evil <strong>and</strong> magic inherent in the natural world (Richter<br />

1992:9-10). While there are variations in the telling of the tale, the basic story depicts<br />

Sky Woman falling from her celestial home through a hole in the uprooted Tree of<br />

Life. As she fell to the watery void below, a great turtle rose from the water to form<br />

dry l<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> other animal spirits emerged to help her as well. In Iroquoian<br />

cosmogony, “the Sky World is populated by ongwe shona, or first peoples; this world<br />

is inhabited by ongwe honwe, ‘real men,’ material re-creations of the ongwe shona of<br />

the Sky World. Both the ongwe honwe <strong>and</strong> the ongwe shona are considered as persons<br />

by the Iroquois; that is, as having a consciousness <strong>and</strong> an awareness of self <strong>and</strong> others”<br />

(Blanchard 1982:219).<br />

In some versions, Sky Woman gives birth to twins first; in others, she initially<br />

has a daughter (Tekawerahkwa), who then is impregnated by the West Wind <strong>and</strong> has<br />

the twins (Iroquois Museum 2009). Either way, the twins exemplify good <strong>and</strong> evil,<br />

respectively. Through the actions of the “Good Twin” <strong>and</strong> the “Bad Twin,” the world<br />

is explained dualistic terms. For every item created by Good Twin, there was an<br />

opposition created by Bad Twin. For example, if Good Twin made a straight river,<br />

Bad Twin added rocks to bend the river; if Good Twin created a food plant, Bad Twin<br />

made a poisonous one (Richter 1992:10). Depending on the version of the story,<br />

Skywoman (or Tekawerahkwa) died in childbirth when Bad Twin tore out of her body<br />

below the arm. From her body, the three sisters were created:corn, beans <strong>and</strong> squash.<br />

Good Twin <strong>and</strong> Bad Twin continued to struggle for power following the death of their<br />

mother. Good Twin triumphed, but since both were gods, neither could die, <strong>and</strong> Good<br />
