course book (40%), interesting homework (40%), music and songs (43%), watching<br />
video clips or DVDs (47%), having posters in the classroom <strong>to</strong> look at (40%) and<br />
learning lists of words (45%).<br />
More than 40% of the students find the following activities ‘a bit useful’: activities<br />
where they move around in the classroom, learning from the course book, creative<br />
writing, creative speaking activities, playing computer games about English, interviewing<br />
each other, mind maps, searching for information on the Internet and discussing<br />
their own lives.<br />
It is clear from their responses that <strong>tvmbo</strong> students <strong>be</strong>lieve that they need <strong>to</strong> do something<br />
with the language and the subject: talking about it is apparently less effective.<br />
English outside the class<br />
We realised during our first interviews that students learn in English outside the classroom,<br />
for example by doing computer or online games, through listening <strong>to</strong> and singing<br />
along <strong>to</strong> music. A question in the surveys asked them about what activities they do<br />
