Dilemmas:
In some Muslim countries, foreign women
are not permitted to travel into certain districts
where entry requires a special passport. Hydro
operates in some of these districts, and some
women managers from Europe need to visit
one of these operations in connection with
their work. Passports are denied; the managers
are quite offended and ask the local Hydro
representatives to appeal against this decision.
The local Hydro representatives know that
such appeals will not be well received by the
local authorities and may undermine cooperation.
How far would you provoke the authorities
in order to facilitate such a visit? How would
you explain this situation to the women managers?
Hydro wants to build a factory in a poor area
inhabited by tribal people. Local and international
NGOs oppose the plans, because they fear
the vulnerable tribal culture and the traditional
way of life in the villages will be destroyed. The
local government supports Hydro’s activities.
They prohibit the local NGOs from taking action
and imprison some of their activists. What do
