Invitation to a Dialogue was our first pubilication
aimed at developing a socially responsive
company culture. It provides an outline of the key
issues, and the ensuing dialogue – based on the
voices of stakeholders – has increased our
understanding.
This publication is another step towards
embedding the concept of social responsibility in
our culture and business practices. Our social
responsibility directive states that CSR is a line
responsibility. The following is a practical guide to
help managers translate the CSR principles laid
down in the directive into sound business practice.
Managing social impact is a complex task,
and there are few “one size fits all” solutions.
Good CSR practice requires prudent consideration
of stakeholder concerns in the context of the
local culture and conditions in question. Invitation
to Action is not, therefore, a straightforward
instruction manual, but an inspirational guide to
help improve the management of social impact.
The governance framework and approaches
outlined in this publication should form the basis
for developing effective CSR practices in our line
organization in response to the challenges and
experience that arise.
At first glance, some of the issues presented
on the following pages may seem to have limited
relevance to day-to-day business operations in
developed host countries. However, diversity and
dialogue are definitly of importance in a European
context.
CSR challenges and priorities will, of course,
differ according to the business and the social
setting. However, everyone should acquire a
basic understanding of the key issues, with
reference to the Hydro value foresight. Social
issues that are insignificant today could be
critical for business tomorrow.
