The principles of Hydro’s Social Responsibility
directive should be known throughout the organization.
Line managers are responsible for CSR
implementation and for communicating the basic
principles to all employees. When necessary, the
principles and the intention of the directive
should be translated into the local language.
Risks and opportunities in relation to CSR
should be identified. We have highlighted a
wide range of both risks and opportunities in
the preceding chapters. These will vary greatly
in different countries and according to the type
of activities. To identify the issues relevant to
a specific operation, try to think how negative
impact on the surroundings could be minimized,
and how the operation could improve social
standards and strengthen Hydro’s competitive
advantage. Then set targets and draw up
action plans. These should aim to minimize
risks and maximize opportunities, and should
include monitoring and follow-up.
Hydro aims to ensure transparency in all our
activities. As a tool to achieve this, we report on
the financial, environmental and societal aspects

of our business. Social reporting is thus an integral
part of sustainability reporting, and it has traditionally
been conducted in the Annual Report.
More extensive reporting procedures on social
issues are emerging; and implementing this is a
continuous process.
CSR questions are also included in internal
audits.
Social reporting shall reflect Hydro’s positive
and negative impact on society, and the effect of
issues on our operations. Social reporting should
provide a basis for future assessments of risk,
improvement tracking, and decision making, and
thus help us to manage operations in a better
way. Systematic social reporting accommodates
the requirements of emerging legislation, pressure
groups and rating agencies. Reporting on
risks and opportunities, targets and plans shall
be carried out through the regular reporting line.
