Social Knowledge
Social knowledge is a prerequisite for good CSR management and for sound business
development. Social knowledge means insight, knowledge and understanding of the
societies and communities in which we operate. It includes history, religion, politics,
the social situation, culture, economy and the local business context we are a part of.
Without social knowledge, we cannot properly evaluate risks or make qualified decisions.

1. General country information:
Several agencies provide updated country and
culture information on the Internet, for example
consultancy agencies, leading NGOs, etc.

2. Baseline Studies:
A social baseline study (preliminary CSR
assessment) is recommended for basic
knowledge of social issues in specific regions
or local communities. This will form the basis for
a good social impact assessment and further
project planning. These studies are normally
provided by independent expertise, for example
a local consultant with good standing and
integrity or an international consultant with
good contacts in several countries.
3. Internal knowledge and understanding:
Training in cross-cultural understanding within
our own organization is necessary to enable
us to utilize properly the information provided
by external expertise. Training must also be
given in local languages.
