The purpose of the present analysis is to ask whether there is clear evidence of change<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g this later period, and if so to identify its nature.<br />

The lower part of Table 13.4 shows the changes, di, <strong>in</strong> the variables from 25 to 50 days.<br />

The log transformation for leucocytes was carried out because this variable (particularly<br />

<strong>in</strong> other data sets) shows positive skewness (see §§2.5 and 10.8). The multiply<strong>in</strong>g factors<br />

for d2 and d3 were <strong>in</strong>troduced, for convenience, to avoid too great a disparity <strong>in</strong> the ranges<br />

of magnitude of the four measures of change; this scal<strong>in</strong>g does not <strong>in</strong>fluence the value of<br />

T 2 <strong>in</strong> (13.14), or the contributions (bidi) of each variable to it.<br />

As a prelim<strong>in</strong>ary step we note the means and standard errors of the four differences,<br />

together with the results of t tests for the hypotheses that the population mean of each<br />

difference is zero:
