Preference <strong>for</strong> induction of anaesthesia<br />

In total, 907 patients were available <strong>for</strong> interview<br />

and were asked to express a preference <strong>for</strong> scenario<br />

A (intravenous anaesthetic) or scenario B<br />

(inhalation anaesthetic) (Table 31). The results<br />

show that 79% patients who had received intravenous<br />

induction would prefer that method in the<br />

future to inhalational induction. The majority of<br />

patients who had received inhalational induction<br />

(64%) would prefer that method in the future to<br />

intravenous induction. This suggests that patients<br />

would prefer the method of induction with which<br />

they feel more familiar, although 68% patients<br />

who were followed up favoured the intravenous<br />

method overall.<br />

CVs <strong>for</strong> induction of anaesthesia<br />

Patients were asked to give a value <strong>for</strong> their<br />

expressed preference. Patients who gave valuations<br />

that were classed as invalid (see appendix 16) were<br />

excluded from the analysis. A minority of patients,<br />

who gave responses of ‘more than £250’ but did<br />

not give an actual value were also excluded. A total<br />

of 773 responses were used in the analysis. The<br />
