Moreover, in relation with <strong>the</strong> previous literature, <strong>the</strong> factors that affect <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong><br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> are defined. According to <strong>the</strong>se factors,<br />
<strong>the</strong> group differences in <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> were<br />
examined. Among personal factors that affect <strong>the</strong> activities <strong>and</strong> interior design<br />
gender, occupational status <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> time spent in <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong> were analyzed<br />
statistically. The only physical factor that was analyzed statistically is <strong>the</strong> existence<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>room</strong>. O<strong>the</strong>r factors such as social status, age <strong>and</strong> life cycle were<br />
examined qualitatively.<br />
1.2. Structure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Thesis<br />
The focus <strong>of</strong> this study is on examining <strong>the</strong> activities that are performed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong><br />
<strong>room</strong> in relation to interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>. The first chapter is <strong>the</strong><br />
introduction which includes <strong>the</strong> review <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> studies that are related to <strong>the</strong><br />
concept <strong>of</strong> home. In this chapter, <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> placing <strong>the</strong> home in <strong>the</strong> psychological<br />
context is discussed. The meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> home in terms <strong>of</strong> its relationship with <strong>the</strong><br />
identity <strong>of</strong> its dweller is also examined.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> second chapter, previous studies about ho<strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> its specific <strong>room</strong>s are<br />
discussed in relation with <strong>the</strong> binary oppositions <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> functions <strong>of</strong> <strong>room</strong>s in <strong>the</strong><br />
ho<strong>use</strong> for different cultures. Mainly, <strong>the</strong> different functions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> family <strong>room</strong> are examined. This chapter includes previous literature about <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> second section, <strong>the</strong> studies that reveal <strong>the</strong> <strong>public</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
