underst<strong>and</strong>ing, clustering <strong>and</strong> dispersing, status consistency <strong>and</strong> status<br />

inconsistency, degree <strong>of</strong> conformity <strong>and</strong> flavor” (pp. 112- 115). Although Riggins<br />

(1994) provides a detailed categorization <strong>of</strong> domestic objects, beca<strong>use</strong> <strong>the</strong> research<br />

was auto-bibliographic <strong>and</strong> based on his family ho<strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>, it is<br />

restrictive according to Woodward (2001).<br />

According to a more recent study based on a research where in-depth interviews<br />

are held with fifty respondents in <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s, objects displayed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong><br />

<strong>room</strong>s are <strong>use</strong>d for three purposes: “as familial obligation, as markers <strong>of</strong> memory<br />

<strong>and</strong> as commemorative objects” (Money, 2007, p. 373). Similarly, Vogel (2002) has<br />

found that objects which are representative <strong>of</strong> something are displayed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong><br />

<strong>room</strong>s <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r objects are placed in a less <strong>public</strong> place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong>. Vogel (2002)<br />

put <strong>the</strong> representative objects into five categories as, “personal characteristic<br />

representation <strong>of</strong> self <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, status representation, relationship representation<br />

including reminders <strong>of</strong> relationships, interest representation <strong>and</strong> memory<br />

representation” (p. 103). Ano<strong>the</strong>r study that examines <strong>the</strong> transaction between<br />

objects <strong>and</strong> people reveals that women keep <strong>the</strong> objects which are special to <strong>the</strong>m<br />

mostly in <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s (Csikszentmihalyi & Rochberg- Halton, 1981). Although<br />

that research is about <strong>the</strong> domestic objects <strong>and</strong> not directly related to <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s,<br />

previous research indicates <strong>the</strong> significance <strong>of</strong> domestic objects for <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>.<br />
