Bilgin (1991) states that it is possible to define <strong>the</strong> identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong>r by looking at<br />
<strong>the</strong> objects that he or she <strong>use</strong>s. The reverse is also true; from psycho-social<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong>r, it is possible to predict what objects he or she might <strong>use</strong>.<br />
He (1991) also states <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> for <strong>the</strong> relationship<br />
between <strong>the</strong> person <strong>and</strong> object. The <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> is <strong>the</strong> place in which family <strong>and</strong><br />
guests get toge<strong>the</strong>r, so it consists <strong>of</strong> objects that are related to <strong>the</strong> activities that<br />
are performed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>. The style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> depends on <strong>the</strong><br />
aes<strong>the</strong>tic <strong>and</strong> decorative concerns <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong>r <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbolic value that is<br />
assigned to objects. Living <strong>room</strong>s are designed through <strong>the</strong> objects that are found<br />
aes<strong>the</strong>tic, decorative <strong>and</strong> recreative. The main fittings <strong>and</strong> furniture that are <strong>use</strong>d in<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s by various income groups are listed as sitting units, cabinets, c<strong>of</strong>fee<br />
tables, dining units <strong>and</strong> accessories (Yıldırım & Başkaya, 2006).<br />
2.5. Factors Affecting <strong>the</strong> Use <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Interior Design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Living Room<br />
Factors affecting <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> could be grouped<br />
as personal, physical, <strong>and</strong> cultural. Personal factors are <strong>the</strong> socio-demographic<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> dwellers. Physical factors are <strong>the</strong> physical characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
ho<strong>use</strong>, <strong>and</strong> cultural factors are <strong>the</strong> cultural background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dweller or <strong>the</strong> period<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> culture in which <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong> is constructed (see Table 2.1. for factors<br />
affecting <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>).<br />
