3. THE FIELD SURVEY<br />
In this chapter, <strong>the</strong> research objectives, questions <strong>and</strong> hypo<strong>the</strong>sis are stated. Then,<br />
information that is related to <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> study is given including <strong>the</strong><br />
sampling procedure <strong>and</strong> data collection, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site. Lastly, <strong>the</strong><br />
findings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> field survey are revealed in four sections which are <strong>the</strong> relationship<br />
between <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>, <strong>the</strong> effect <strong>of</strong> existence<br />
<strong>of</strong> a family <strong>room</strong> on <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>, group<br />
differences on <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sources <strong>of</strong><br />
interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>.<br />
3.1. Research Objectives<br />
The factors that affect <strong>the</strong> <strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> a <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> could be<br />
grouped as personal factors, which are <strong>the</strong> personal characteristics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dweller,<br />
physical factors related to <strong>the</strong> physical features <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> cultural factors,<br />
which are <strong>the</strong> cultural background <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dweller or <strong>the</strong> period <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> culture in<br />
which <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong> is constructed. Personal factors could be listed as follows; (1) social<br />
status; (2) gender; (3) life cycle; (4) childhood experiences <strong>and</strong> (5) <strong>the</strong> time spent<br />
working outside <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong>. Physical factors are (1) location; (2) size; (3) layout;<br />
(4) number <strong>of</strong> <strong>room</strong>s <strong>and</strong> (5) <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>room</strong> (see Section 2.5. for<br />
<strong>the</strong> detailed explanations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se factors).<br />
