According to <strong>the</strong> results that are obtained from chi- square tests, <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />

significant relationship between gender <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> person who made decisions about<br />

<strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> (χ² = 23.294, df= 2, p = .000). This result<br />

indicates that for female respondents, <strong>the</strong> person who made decisions about <strong>the</strong><br />

interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> is <strong>the</strong>mselves, but for males it is <strong>the</strong>ir partner (see<br />

Figure 3.21 for <strong>the</strong> relationship between gender <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> person who made<br />

decisions about <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>). Previous studies indicated<br />

that <strong>the</strong>re is dominance <strong>of</strong> women in <strong>the</strong> personalization <strong>of</strong> ho<strong>use</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

management <strong>of</strong> consumption (Cross, 1997; Ayata, 2002). Men especially avoid<br />

personalization <strong>of</strong> spaces <strong>use</strong>d commonly in <strong>the</strong> ho<strong>use</strong> like <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> (Cooper,<br />

1974). The results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current study support <strong>the</strong> previous literature in that<br />

respect. Female respondents are dominant in both decision making for <strong>the</strong> interior<br />

design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> <strong>and</strong> in shopping for furniture <strong>and</strong> accessories. Some male<br />

respondents are pleased by that situation; for example, one respondent stated that;<br />

Although my wife chose all <strong>the</strong> furniture <strong>and</strong> made <strong>the</strong> decisions by herself,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> reflects <strong>the</strong> identity <strong>of</strong> both <strong>of</strong> us.<br />

(51 years old, male)<br />

On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, some male respondents are not pleased from that situation, as<br />

indicated below;<br />

My wife took all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> decisions, I have no authority. The <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> has <strong>the</strong><br />

female identity. It is too complicated like a woman. My wife goes shopping<br />

whenever she feels upset or happy. If she is upset, <strong>the</strong> thing she buys is ugly.<br />

If a man makes <strong>the</strong> decisions <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> will be simpler. It will be<br />

just modern or just classic. Now, our <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> is too complex, it has no<br />

soul. Nothing reflects me here.<br />
