3.3.4. The Sources <strong>of</strong> Interior Design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Living Room<br />

This section relates to <strong>the</strong> qualitative analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> results that are related to <strong>the</strong><br />

sources <strong>of</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> style <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>.<br />

Rechavi (2004) states that <strong>the</strong> sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong><br />

develop both with <strong>the</strong> style <strong>and</strong> dweller’s concept <strong>of</strong> what a <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> might look<br />

like. Grier (1988) claims that middle class dwellers have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to see what<br />

a <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> should look like from <strong>the</strong> pictures <strong>of</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s <strong>of</strong> upper class in<br />

exhibitions in 19 th century, trains, or women magazines. Cooper- Marcus (1995)<br />

state that dwellers reflect <strong>the</strong>ir childhood memories into <strong>the</strong>ir ho<strong>use</strong>s not as direct<br />

replicas, but <strong>the</strong>se reflections aimed to create a certain atmosphere. Rechavi (2004)<br />

also states that <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> in one’s mind is developed both by <strong>the</strong><br />

objects in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> activities that are performed in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>. In<br />

her (2004) study, participants developed <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> by childhood<br />

memories, stores, TV programs, magazines, books or o<strong>the</strong>r people’s ho<strong>use</strong>s. The<br />

childhood ho<strong>use</strong> <strong>of</strong> dwellers was <strong>the</strong> most frequently mentioned source.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> current study, <strong>the</strong> sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> were<br />

asked to <strong>the</strong> respondents. Respondents could mention more than one source.<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> responses, <strong>the</strong> main sources are stores, magazines, o<strong>the</strong>r people’s<br />

ho<strong>use</strong>s, interior architects, childhood memories, books, TV <strong>and</strong> internet (see Figure<br />

3.26 for frequencies <strong>of</strong> sources <strong>of</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>). The sources <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> interior design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> are mostly developed by stores or magazines.<br />

As mentioned before, <strong>the</strong> design decisions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s were mostly taken by<br />
