The <strong>public</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>private</strong> division <strong>of</strong> <strong>living</strong> space can still be observed in contemporary<br />

Turkish ho<strong>use</strong>s. In some ho<strong>use</strong>s, family members <strong>use</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>room</strong> for daily<br />

activities <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> is <strong>use</strong>d only for entertaining guests. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re are ho<strong>use</strong>s without a separate family <strong>room</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> is <strong>use</strong>d<br />

for both daily activities <strong>of</strong> family members <strong>and</strong> for entertaining guests. The current<br />

study examines <strong>the</strong> impacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> a separate family <strong>room</strong> (in addition<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>) on <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> activities that take place in <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>.<br />

2.2. Private <strong>and</strong> Public Use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Living Room<br />

Rechavi (2009) reveals “…that <strong>the</strong> <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong> can be a space for both <strong>public</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>private</strong> <strong>use</strong>s” (p. 141). Her study, which examines “…people’s <strong>use</strong>s <strong>and</strong> experiences<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s”, showed that <strong>the</strong> participants <strong>use</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>living</strong> <strong>room</strong>s for<br />
