INFANT AND MATERNAL MORTALITY 2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT MATERNAL MORTALITY COUNTS AND RATES In 2003, there were thirteen maternal deaths in Louisiana. Louisiana’s maternal mortality rate for 2003 was 18.6 deaths per 100,000 live births. The maternal mortality rate for the 1993-2003 period was 10 deaths per 100,000 live births. Racial differences are evident as black mothers are far more likely to die of pregnancy related causes than white mothers are. Care must be taken when comparing maternal mortality rates over time, because substantial fluctuation in these rates exists due to the small number of deaths each year. For causes of maternal death, please refer to Table 5.11 in the death chapter of this report. 2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT INFANT AND MATERNAL MORTALITY INFANT MORTALITY COUNTS AND RATES In 2003, there were 604 infant deaths and 661 in 2002. Louisiana’s 2003 infant mortality rate was 9.7 per 1,000 live births. To help identify factors that lead to infant deaths, infant mortality is divided into two categories based on the child’s age at death. Deaths occurring during the first 27 days of life are labeled neonatal deaths, while those occurring from 28 days through 364 days of age are termed postneonatal deaths. In general, neonatal deaths reflect problems with heredity, prenatal development, and the birth process; postneonatal deaths are influenced by environmental factors, such as nutrition, hygiene, and accidents. The distinction between these two periods, however, has blurred in recent years because of increased survival of premature infants due to advances in neonatology. Since the mid-1960s, infant mortality rates for both Louisiana and the United States have declined, largely due to advances in the development and use of antibiotics and vaccines, and improvements in the practice of neonatology.
