LIVE BIRTHS 2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT In Louisiana, adequacy of prenatal care is measured by a modified Kessner index (see Technical Notes). This index defines prenatal care as adequate if the first prenatal visit occurred in the first trimester of pregnancy, and if the total number of visits was appropriate to the gestational age of the baby at birth. However, because these measures assess neither the quality nor the content of prenatal care, they must be recognized only as estimates of the actual adequacy of the care received. In Louisiana, the percentage of live births to mothers entering prenatal care in the first trimester has increased steadily since the early 1990s (Table 2.17), a trend that has been noticed in the United States as well. 2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT LIVE BIRTHS In Louisiana, blacks were less likely than whites to enter into prenatal care in the first trimester, as shown in Table 2.18. Table 2.18: Rates + of Selected Medical Risk Factors for Complications of Pregnancy by Maternal Race and Age Louisiana, 2003 Medical Risk Factors for Complications of Pregnancy The birth attendant records medical risk factors on the birth certificate by checking any of 16 listed risk factors, or by specifying “other” or “none”. Multiple risk factors can be recorded on a birth certificate. Medical risk factors reported on the birth certificate differed somewhat by age, with very young mothers and older mothers reporting the highest rates of medical risks.
