In 2003, the top three causes of death for both whites and blacks were diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, and cerebrovascular disease. Although the leading causes of death were similar among all race groups, there were considerable differences in race-specific crude death rates (Figure 5.11, and Table 5.5). Crude death rates among whites were notably higher than those among blacks for diseases of the heart (277.6 vs. 221.3), malignant neoplasms (226.2 vs. 189.6), chronic lower respiratory disease (47.8 vs. 20.9), Alzheimer’s disease (33.7 vs. 13.0), and suicide (13.6 vs. 3.6). Crude death rates for blacks substantially exceeded those for whites for Diabetes Mellitus (51.4 vs. 32.6), Homicide (31.7 vs. 4.0), HIV infection (20.3 vs. 2.9), and Essential (Primary) Hypertension & Hypertensive Renal Disease (11.4 vs. 6.2).

For the three leading causes of death, as well as nephritis, influenza and pneumonia, and septicemia, ageadjusted death rates for 2003 were higher in black males than in all other race/gender groups.
