SUMMARY 2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT SUMMARY OF VITAL EVENTS IN 2003 POPULATION State population 1 : 4,496,334 Louisiana has the 24 th largest population among the fifty states. 2 Percent of population in race group: 64.7% white, 33.2% black, 2.2% other race. The national breakdown by race is 81.3% white, 13.1% black, and 5.6% other race. 3 LIVE BIRTH Number of births: 64,689 In 2003 the total number of births was 64,689 and 64,755 in 2002. Birth Rate: 14.4 live births per 1,000 population This is the lowest state birth rate in more than half a century. Fertility Rate: 65.8 live births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years Following a high fertility rate of 80.7 in 1982, Louisiana's fertility rate declined steadily to 64.9 in 1996. Since 1996 the state's fertility rate has remained relatively stable around 66.1. Number of births to teens aged 15-19 years: 9,452 In Louisiana, 14.6 % of the total live births were from mothers 15-19 years old. Birth Rate in teens aged 15-19 years: 55.6 live births per 1,000 women aged 15-19 In Louisiana, the teen birth rate went slightly down compared to 57.8 in 2002.
