Rounding out the ten leading causes of death to Louisiana residents in 2003 were: Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases;
Alzheimer’s disease; Nephritis, Nephrotic Syndrome, and Nephrosis; Influenza and Pneumonia; and Septicemia. Louisiana and
the United States shared the same ten leading causes of death in 2003, but differed in the rates at which they occurred, and
thus their rank order. The three leading causes of death in both Louisiana and the United States in 2003 were heart disease,
cancer, and stroke. Louisiana's crude death rates, however, exceeded the national rates for eight of the ten leading causes of
death; only Chronic Lower Respiratory Diseases and Influenza and Pneumonia rates were higher at the national level. The
ranking of age-adjusted death rates was determined by listing the crude death rates from highest to lowest and then adjusting
these rates for age, maintaining the original rank order (Table 5.2, Figure 5.4).
