Infant Mortality by Infant Gender and Race
As in past years, Louisiana’s infant mortality rate for males in 2003 was higher than the rate for females. Rates for black infants
were higher than those for white infants, while rates for black males were higher than those for black females and whites of both
sexes (Figure 6.4, Table 6.6).

Leading Causes of Infant Death
Perinatal conditions, congenital malformations, and ill-defined conditions, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS),
accounted for 46.2%, 18.0%, and 25.5% of infant deaths in Louisiana in 2003 respectively (Table 6.5). Historically, these three
have been the leading causes of death among infant deaths in the state (Figure 6.5 and Figure 6.6, Table 6.7 on page 121).
Irrespective of cause of death, 35.6% of all infant deaths (215 deaths) occurred within the first day of life, and 38.6% (233
deaths) occurred between the 28 th and 364 th day of life (Table 6.7).
