*Rank is based on rate per 100,000 race-specific population. For "Other" rank is based on number of deaths.
****Cells suppressed to protect confidentiality
Notes: White: 12 th Parkinson’s Disease, 225 deaths, rate=7.7
15 th Pneumonitis due to solids and liquids, 170 deaths, rate=5.8
Black: 14 th rank is Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal period(P00-P96), 190 deaths, rate=12.7
Other: rate not calculated because of instability due to low frequency
“-“in cell indicates the race-specific rate is not ranked in the top fifteen.
In 2003, the top three causes of death for both whites and blacks were diseases of the heart, malignant neoplasms, and
cerebrovascular disease. Although the leading causes of death were similar among all race groups, there were considerable
differences in race-specific crude death rates (Figure 5.11, and Table 5.5). Crude death rates among whites were notably
higher than those among blacks for diseases of the heart (277.6 vs. 221.3), malignant neoplasms (226.2 vs. 189.6), chronic
lower respiratory disease (47.8 vs. 20.9), Alzheimer’s disease (33.7 vs. 13.0), and suicide (13.6 vs. 3.6). Crude death rates for
blacks substantially exceeded those for whites for Diabetes Mellitus (51.4 vs. 32.6), Homicide (31.7 vs. 4.0), HIV infection (20.3
vs. 2.9), and Essential (Primary) Hypertension & Hypertensive Renal Disease (11.4 vs. 6.2).
