2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT INFANT MORTALITY: Selected Causes
Leading Causes of Infant Death by Race and Infant Gender
In 2003, the three leading causes of infant deaths in Louisiana were Perinatal Conditions, Congenital Malformations, and Ill-
Defined Conditions (ICD-10 codes P00-P96, Q00-Q99, and R00-R99, respectively).
In 2003 the mortality rate for Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period was 431.3 per 100,000 live births, while the
rate for Ill-defined conditions (termed by the ICD-10 as “symptoms, signs, and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not
elsewhere classified”) was 129.9 per 100,000 live births (Table 6.9). Within the category of ill-defined conditions, SIDS is the
largest and most well-known classification. Classifications which included fewer than 20 cases in an individual race-sex group
should be considered unstable as in the case of SIDS.
The high rates of mortality in the leading cause categories experienced by infants of other races were based upon very small
counts of infant deaths and should, therefore, be considered unstable.
