cause <strong>of</strong> death in such a way that the fetus falls in a “catch-all” or non-specific category that prohibits in-depth analysis. For<br />

instance, 26.6% <strong>of</strong> the 541 fetal deaths reported in <strong>Louisiana</strong> in <strong>2003</strong> were classified under “Other conditions originating in the<br />

perinatal period.” Around 26.2% <strong>of</strong> the fetal deaths were classified under “Fetal death <strong>of</strong> unspecified cause”.<br />

Fetal deaths described in this section include all fetal deaths reported to the <strong>Vital</strong> Records Registry in <strong>2003</strong>, regardless <strong>of</strong><br />

gestational age or birthweight.<br />

The leading cause <strong>of</strong> fetal death was “Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period”, the most frequent <strong>of</strong> these being<br />

“fetus affected by complications <strong>of</strong> placenta, cord and membranes”.<br />

Table 3.8 summarizes all fetal deaths reported to <strong>Louisiana</strong> in <strong>2003</strong> by cause, maternal age, and maternal race.<br />
