When examined by age group, the leading causes <strong>of</strong> death in <strong>Louisiana</strong> in the year <strong>2003</strong> followed the traditional pattern <strong>of</strong><br />
mortality seen in the United States. Accidents, the primary cause <strong>of</strong> death among young people, gave way to deaths from<br />
chronic conditions such as cancer and heart disease in the middle-aged and elderly (Table 5.7).<br />
