Mortality by Race
Certain Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period
Of the 42,297 deaths to Louisiana residents in 2003, 28,947 (68.5%) occurred among whites, 13,075 (30.9%) among blacks and
275 (less than 1%) among other races. The crude death rate in whites (995.7 per 100,000 white population) was higher than in
blacks (876.4 per 100,000 black population) (Table 5.5). Throughout the 1990s, the crude death rate among whites increased,
while that of blacks generally remained stable (Figure 5.10).
