Fertility rates are based solely on women in their prime childbearing years, considered for calculation purposes to be 15-44
years of age. They are more useful than crude birth rates in controlling for differences in age-distribution among women who
give birth and are useful for comparisons of fertility among age, racial, and socioeconomic groups. In the last half-century,
Louisiana and the United States have followed a similar fertility pattern, with a trend toward declining fertility rates. In 2003, the
Louisiana fertility rate was 65.8 and the United States rate was 66.1 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years. (3)
