LIVE BIRTHS 2003 LOUISIANA VITAL STATISTICS REPORT BIRTH COUNTS AND RATES Number of Births In the year 2003, there were 64,689 live births to Louisiana residents (Figure 2.1, Table 2.1). Crude Birth Rate Changes in crude birth rates reflect changes in the number and age distribution of women of childbearing age. Because crude birth rates relate the number of live births to the total population in an area, without regard to the age or sex distribution of the population, they are useful in projecting population changes in the area. Louisiana’s 2003 crude birth rate was 14.4 live births per 1,000 population. The national rate was 14.1(Figure 2.2, Table 2.1) (2) . Fertility rates are based solely on women in their prime childbearing years, considered for calculation purposes to be 15-44 years of age. They are more useful than crude birth rates in controlling for differences in age-distribution among women who give birth and are useful for comparisons of fertility among age, racial, and socioeconomic groups. In the last half-century, Louisiana and the United States have followed a similar fertility pattern, with a trend toward declining fertility rates. In 2003, the Louisiana fertility rate was 65.8 and the United States rate was 66.1 births per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years.
